Illinois Institute of Technology Service Building

Alfred S. Alschuler
1940-41 (original State Street section 1926, addition 1944, demolished 1968)
13 West 33rd Street

The building was constructed in the early 1940s to serve as as an Armour Research Foundation laboratory building and soon became the first headquarters of the Institute of Gas Technology. An addition was built for the IGT in 1944. The State Street Building also housed Illinois Tech's temporary gymnasium in the mid-1960s. Some reports indicate that this building included a row of 1880s storefronts along State Street, others that the pre-existing section of structure was built in 1926.
