Five bays of this building, known then as the Diesel Lab Building, were constructed in 1944, with five new bays following later that year. In 1945, an additional 7 bays were begun. Only upon their completion in 1946, did the ARF Engineering Research Building reach its final dimensions.
The university library was housed in the south section of the building before the construction of the John Crerar Library in 1962.
